Moving to Levin

Is Levin a good place to live? Moving to Levin from Wellington, Kāpiti or further afield

Levin is the largest town in Horowhenua, about 95 kilometres north of Wellington and 50 kilometres from Palmerston North, with the Tararua Range on one side and the coast on the other. Many people look at Levin because homes cost far less than in Wellington, and the town has the facilities of a much larger place. This guide gives you the facts, including the trade-offs, so you can decide whether it suits you.

What is Levin like to live in?

Levin has a community hub in Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō, with the library, a café and meeting rooms. It also has the Levin Aquatic Centre with four indoor pools, the Levin Adventure Park, sports grounds at Donnelly Park, and native bush walks at Waiopehu Scenic Reserve about five minutes from town. The Horowhenua Health Centre brings together GPs, a lab, a pharmacy and radiology, and secondary schools include Horowhenua College and Waiopehu College. Our Levin area guide covers the town and its neighbourhoods in more detail.

How many people live in Levin, and is it growing?

The 2023 Census counted 19,539 people in Levin and 36,696 in the Horowhenua District. Horowhenua’s growth was close to zero from 1991 to 2013, then rose sharply, from about 400 people a year between 2013 and 2018 to about 800 a year between 2019 and 2023. Council projects growth of 1.5 per cent a year to 2030, rising to 2.1 per cent a year until 2044, which would take the district above 54,000 people by 2044. Forecasts were lowered after 2021, but Horowhenua is still expected to be the fastest-growing district in the Manawatū-Whanganui region.

Tara-Ika, a growth area on the south-east edge of Levin, was rezoned in 2024 to allow development.

The Levin figure covers 12 months and the others cover a single month, so treat the comparison as a guide. Even so, the gap is large. The median weekly rent in Levin over the past 12 months was $531. Rates also matter: read our guide to rates and LIMs for the 2026/27 increases and what a LIM costs.

Can I commute from Levin to Wellington?

Yes, but it is a long commute and it needs planning. The Capital Connection train stops at Levin on weekdays, running between Palmerston North and Wellington. It leaves Palmerston North at 6.15am and reaches Wellington at 8.20am, and the return service leaves Wellington at 5.15pm. It does not run on public holidays. Great Journeys New Zealand does not publish the Levin times on its page, so check them with the operator before you commit. Snapper and Metlink tickets are not accepted, and monthly and ten-trip passes are the cheapest option.

The train service is due to improve. Horizons Regional Council has contracted new battery-electric trains due from 2029, with more weekday services and weekend trains. The new Ōtaki to north of Levin highway is also under construction and due for completion in 2029. If you will commute by road, try the drive at the times you would actually travel.

Who does Levin suit?

Levin suits first-home buyers who cannot find a home they can afford closer to Wellington, families who want more space and a section, people who work from home or only need to be in Wellington some days, and people who want to downsize to a town with a health centre, library, pools and shops close at hand. It suits less well anyone who needs to be in a Wellington office five days a week at fixed hours, unless the commute fits.

What should I check before I buy in Levin?

  • Read the LIM for flooding, natural hazard and consent information.
  • Arrange a building inspection, especially for older homes. Our guide to buying an older home explains what to look for.
  • Check zoning and planned work nearby, including Tara-Ika and the new highway route.
  • Visit at different times of day and try your real journeys to work, school and shops.
  • Ask your insurer about cover for the address before you go unconditional.
