Levin is the heart of Horowhenua, about 95 kilometres north of Wellington and 50 kilometres from Palmerston North, with the Tararua Range on one side and the coast on the other. It is a practical, friendly town with good facilities and a train to Wellington. This guide covers what Levin offers and how its neighbourhoods compare.
Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō on Bath Street is the town’s community hub, with the library, visitor information, a café, a youth space with a recording studio, meeting rooms and a Chinese garden. The Levin Aquatic Centre on Queen Street has four indoor pools, including a hydrotherapy pool and a 70-metre hydroslide, and the Levin Adventure Park on Oxford Street has an under-fives area, climbing wall, skate park and a free miniature train on weekend afternoons.
For sport, Donnelly Park on Adkin Avenue has cricket, netball, football, hockey and a BMX track. For nature, Waiopehu Scenic Reserve on Queen Street East has native forest and bush walks about five minutes from town, and the Tararua Forest Park tracks start a short drive away. The Horowhenua Health Centre on Liverpool Street brings together GPs, a lab, a pharmacy and radiology, and secondary schooling includes Horowhenua College and Waiopehu College.
The Capital Connection train runs to Wellington on weekdays and is due to be replaced with new battery-electric trains from 2029, bringing more weekday services and weekend trains. Buses link Levin with Palmerston North each weekday and with Shannon, Manakau, Ōtaki and Waikanae on set days. The new Ōtaki to north of Levin highway is under construction and due for completion in 2029.
Tara-Ika, a 420-hectare growth area on the south-east edge of town, was rezoned in 2024 and is planned for around 2,500 homes. In the town centre, the council has bought Oxford Street properties to bring back to market by 2028 as part of a wider transformation plan.
