Koputaroa and Poroutawhao

Living in Koputaroa and Poroutawhao: a local guide for buyers and sellers

Just north of Levin, Koputaroa and Poroutawhao are rural communities of farms, lifestyle blocks and country homes. Koputaroa sits on State Highway 57 on the way to Shannon, and Poroutawhao lies just north-west of Levin on State Highway 1. Together they had 858 residents at the 2023 census, up from 768 in 2018.

What is it like to live here?

These are close-knit country communities built around their schools and halls. Koputaroa School on Koputaroa Road has taught Years 1 to 8 since 1891, with a roll of more than 180, and Koputaroa Hall sits right next door. Poroutawhao School, also Years 1 to 8, has a roll of around 95, and Poroutawhao has its own community hall.

Both communities have deep Ngāti Raukawa connections. Kererū Marae at Koputaroa and Huia and Matau Marae at Poroutawhao are important meeting places, and there are several Māori land blocks around Poroutawhao. For something different, Heights Experience on Te Rohenga Road at Koputaroa runs clay shooting, archery and axe throwing by appointment.

Who does the area suit?

Koputaroa and Poroutawhao suit buyers who want space, a country school and room for animals or a large garden, while staying close to Levin for shopping, secondary schools and services.

What should I check before buying rural or lifestyle property?

  • Title and access. Check the title for covenants, easements and legal access, and confirm the boundaries.
  • Water and wastewater. Confirm the water supply, the wastewater system and its condition.
  • The land. Look at fencing, drainage and the condition of sheds and outbuildings.
  • Hazards. Read the LIM for flooding and natural hazard information.
  • Neighbouring land. Talk to your lawyer about any neighbouring Māori land and what it means for access or future use.
  • Roads. Consider road noise and access near State Highways 1 and 57.

Thinking of selling?

Rural and lifestyle buyers ask detailed questions about water, wastewater, fencing and access. Having that information, the LIM and any reports ready makes it easier for them to commit. Ask us for a free appraisal based on the closest comparable sales.
